Dear OSB Members

You have to see it. It's not just the old, gnarly vines -- impossibly twisted plants set low to the ground, seemingly cowering in the face of the Mistral. It's the ground. Here in one of the most beautiful spots in all of France, a place where lavender grows wild and ancient vine Grenache reigns supreme, the earth is purple.

From that spot, set at 1200 feet, one of the Rhone's more brilliant and energetic winegrowers fashions a single, tiny production cuvee called Terre Pourpre . In the historic 2007 vintage, Adrien Fabre tore the cover off the ball!

Sadly, this is the last of a truly eye-g vintage Parker called 'the greatest in his 30 years of tasting.' The 2007 Terre Pourpre is indeed purple -- right to the edge. The aromas are high-elevation explosive, the flavors of crushed red fruit, laced with wild herbs. Rated 91 points, and it deserves more.

Winemaker Adrien Fabre Purple Earth, Old Vines, and the 91 Point Rarity

It was the untold story of the 2007 vintage in the southern Rhone -- but for bargain-hunters, the most engaging. While many of the estates in and around Chateauneuf struggled to maintain firm acids to balance out the vintage's monumental concentration (often ending up with soft wines where pH hovered close to 4.0), a handful of superb small estates in the cooler, high-elevation microclimates got it all -- phenomenal richness and superb length. This is one of the best.

We got to Adrien Fabre on the recommendation of Julien Barrot, the wunderkind Chateauneuf winemaker who has already posted more 99+ wines in a few years than most of his neighbors post in a lifetime. When we got to Visan, the idyllic, garrigue-coated village a half hour north of Julien's place, we knew immediately why Barrot had sent us to Fabre. Their young winegrower smiles were the same. As was their infectious laughter. But most importantly, the ingeniously energetic pair a common inventive fascination for their vines.

Adrien Fabre's 2007 "Terre Pourpre," is drawn from a single stone-riddled parcel set at 1200 feet in elevation where 70-year-old head-trained Grenache flourishes. The clay beneath the moonscape is blue/black (hence "Purple Earth"). The wine? Just now coming into its own. This 2007, which had been sitting back on its heels, is now deep, dark purple, chiseled. The small berry aromatics are packed with red fruit, tinged with the herbes de Provence that seem to grow wild all over Visan. Packed with beautifully concentrated fruit, yet still begging for oxygen or a lengthy stay in a cool cellar. The finish? Pure Visan. Long, sweet, irrepressible.

Why is "Terre Pourpre" just strutting its stuff while so many wines from Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Chateauneuf burst out of the gates like racehorses? When we arrived chez Fabre, we understood pretty quickly. Just 25 miles north of Chateauneuf, Visan is noticeably cooler, and the wind that whips up the valley, cleanses these vines as it keeps them cool. The nights 'sont frais,' Adrien told us, so all those moon-like stones retain the freshness of the evening through the morning hours, regulating the heat. So while the challenge in Chateauneuf is in retaining acid balance, the winegrowing puzzle in Visan -- particularly on this amazing high-elevation parcel -- is in maximizing maturity. In 2007, Adrien barely had to do anything; nature took care of the concentration!

Just 50 cases have been earmarked for WineAccess members, all shipped via refrigerated truck to the stateside warehouse. $22.99/bottle on cases. Don't miss it.

Label Image Tasting Notes

2007 Domaine La Florane Cotes du Rhone Terre Pourpre Visan
"Densely packed with braised fig, bittersweet cocoa, mulled currant and dark plum notes, with plenty of grip in reserve. The graphite- and mineral-filled finish should blossom with cellaring. Has muscle and purity."
WS 91
 James Molesworth, Wine Spectator

"Dark purple color, explosive ripe red fruit aromas tinged with garrigue. Deeply concentrated, only nowg up, showing off all the lavish old-vine Grenache flavors, laced with Syrah plumpness. But it's the finish that sets this one apart. Fresh and vibrant with lots of sinew. Based on the wine's evolution, don't be in any hurry to consume the 2007 Terre Pourpre."
